Subject Arrested After Setting Residence on Fire

At 5:09 PM, November 12, 2018, Jefferson County 911 received a call of an argument between mother and son, with the son possibly being suicidal; at 10927 Arapaho Lane in Ozawkie, Ks.

Deputies responded with the first arriving on scene at 5:23 PM.

The son barricaded himself in a bedroom at the east end of the residence, with a pit-bull and a knife.

Deputies engaged the subject, attempting to talk with him and convince him to come out and surrender.  The subject then started a fire in the home while he and family pets were inside.  Deputies immediately took action and pulled the subject from the burning structure.   The subject began fighting with three Deputies.   Subject was taken into custody and restrained.

Oskaloosa Fire Department, Rock Creek Fire Department, Ozawkie Fire Department, Kentucky Fire Department and District 11 Fire Department, along with Jefferson County Ambulance Service responded to the call. 

The residence is declared a total loss.

The subject, identified as:  James Patrick Hutchins of 10927 Arapaho Lane  Ozawkie, Ks.   was arrested and is being booked in with the charges of Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer X's 3 / Felony Arson / Felony Criminal Damage / Felony Battery on a Correctional Officer / and Cruelty To Animal (intent to Kill an animal) X's 4.

This incident is still under investigation with a possibility of additional charges to come.
