Spring Safety Starts on the Road

As the winter warms up and the flowers begin to bloom, we at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office welcome the arrival of spring.

The spring season comes with a sense of renewal and new beginnings, making us eager to get outside and enjoy all of the season offers.   However, it is important to remember that new challenges and responsibilities come with the change in the weather.

We want to remind everyone that safety should always be a top priority, regardless of your plans this spring.   With warmer weather and longer daylight hours, many of us will spend more time outside.  Whether taking a walk, jogging, or biking, always be aware of your surroundings and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and those around you.

Please slow down and take extra caution when driving through residential neighborhoods.  Since many of us will be spending more time outside, it is likely that more children in our community may be playing near roads.  When drivers maintain safe speeds and practice other safe driving behaviors, safer environments are created for our community.

• Look out for pedestrians everywhere and at all times.
• Be extra cautious when driving in hard-to-see conditions and backing up your vehicle.
• Be prepared to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and stop your vehicle well back from the crosswalk.
• Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk.
• Follow the speed limit, especially around people on the street, in school zones, and in neighborhoods where children are present.
• Never drive under the influence.

Sheriff Jeff Herrig            

                                                                                        

Sheriff Herrig has been employed at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office since 1982.

In 1993 he was appointed by then Sheriff Roy Dunnaway to the position of Undersheriff.

On April 4th, 2008, he was appointed to the position of Sheriff by Governor Kathleen Sebelius, to fill out the term of Sheriff Dunnaway.

Sheriff Herrig is a member of the National Sheriff's Association, Kansas Sheriff's Association, Capital Area Major Case Squad, International Association of Property & Evidence, Kansas Chiefs of Police Association, and Midwest Association of Certified Voice Stress Analysts.

On July 22, 2009, Sheriff Herrig was appointed to represent the Kansas Sheriff's on the Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency prevention by the Governor.

January 2015, Sheriff Herrig was appointed President of the Kansas Sheriff's Association.

On July 1, 2015, Sheriff Herrig was appointed by Governor Brownback as a member on the Kansas Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training.

On July 6, 2018, Sheriff Herrig was appointed by Governor Jeff Colyer as a member of the Kansas Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training.

On May 21, 2021, Sheriff Herrig was appointed as a member of the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Advisory Committee by Governor Laura Kelly.

On October 11, 2022, Sheriff Herrig was appointed as a member of the Kansas Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training.
